(BCN) -- For six generations since emigrating from Mexico to America, Clarissa Renteria's family never voted. If any campaign mailers arrived during election season, Renteria's parents -- who both worked as warehouse workers in Woodlake, an agricultural town of 7,600 in California's citrus belt -- would throw them away. When their neighbor was elected mayor of Woodlake, Renteria's father shrugged it off. "Look at him trying to fit in," Renteria remembers her father saying."My family just didn't feel included in the politics, didn't feel seen," Renteria, 25, said in an interview at a voter registration event in Tulare. "It was just like: 'You guys obviously don't care about me. I don't care about you, and I'm not going to vote. I'm just going to work to live and that's it.'" Rep. Lois Frankel, D-Fla., quit the Congressional Progressive Caucus over an internal split on Israel’s siege on Gaza, according to two sources familiar with her quiet departure. Like many Democrats, Frankel has proclaimed “unwavering support for Israel,” while other caucus members are pushing a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.Frankel, first elected to Congress in 2012 and a CPC member since at least 2016, had been considering leaving the caucus for several weeks, according to one source. She was one of at least six caucus members who voted earlier this month to censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich. Frankel’s departure is a symptom of a larger split growing within the caucus over the congressional response to the war in Gaza. It comes despite the fact that the CPC rarely takes public positions on Israel–Palestine, given the deep divides within the caucus, and has not taken a position on the current crisis. But the tensions and animosities produced within the progressiv...As Manchin Prepares Senate Exit, His Friends and Daughter Are Lining Up a No Labels Lookalike

West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin made a not-so-surprising announcement earlier this month that he will not seek reelection to the Senate next year. His announcement came after a monthslong flirtation with No Labels, a centrist political organization that is preparing to run a third-party candidate for president should both major parties’ candidates fail to moderate their politics “towards the center.” In the background, Manchin has been propping up a new third-way organization. Along with his daughter Heather Bresch, he has been soliciting funds for a new nonprofit that, according to documents reviewed by The Intercept, is being overseen by the senator’s longtime associates who became significant power players in West Virginia after receiving plum appointments during Manchin’s rise to the top of the state Democratic Party. Bresch, a former pharmaceutical executive, registered Americans Together in July as a 501(c)(4), a legal classification that means it is not required to p...Stock market today: Wall Street gains ground at the start of a holiday-shortened week

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll says he believes quarterback Geno Smith will be able to recover from an arm injury in time for Thursday’s game against San Francisco.Speaking Monday on his weekly radio show on KIRO-AM, Carroll said Smith suffered a contusion to the tendon where the triceps meets the elbow in the 17-16 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Smith was injured in the second half on a hit from Aaron Donald.Asked if Smith would be ready for the 49ers, Carroll said, “I would think so.”“It’s a good sign that he’s functional, so that’s not the issue. It’s just how sore he is,” Carroll said.Smith was replaced by Drew Lock for two drives in the fourth quarter, but Smith returned for Seattle’s final possession and completed 3 of 5 passes to get into field-goal range, but Jason Myers missed a 55-yard attempt in the final seconds.Smith finished 22 of 34 for 233 yards and one touchdown.“We’ll see how he responds the next couple of days, but it was a good sign that ...Jordan Spieth to finish Rory McIlroy’s term on PGA Tour board

Golf Channel first reported his memo. Spieth was the unanimous choice of the five other board members. He now joins Tiger Woods, Patrick Cantlay, Charley Hoffman, Webb Simpson and Peter Malnati. Hoffman goes off the board next year and is succeeded by Adam Scott. “Something had to give and there’s guys that are on that board that are spending a lot more time and a lot more energy on it than I am,” McIlroy said. “It’s in good hands and I felt like it was the...49ers safety Talanoa Hufanga will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco 49ers safety Talanoa Hufanga will miss the rest of the season after tearing the ACL in his right knee.Coach Kyle Shanahan said tests on Monday confirmed the original diagnosis and that there was no other extensive damage to the knee. Shanahan said Hufanga will be expected to recover before the start of next season.Hufanga emerged last season as a key part of San Francisco’s defense when he earned All-Pro honors. He had three interceptions and 52 tackles this season before going down with the injury. The injury to Hufanga forces third-round rookie Ji’Ayir Brown into the lineup for the Niners defense. Brown had played only 30 defensive snaps all season before thriving when he had to take on a bigger role against the Buccaneers.“You’re never going through some sort of like redshirt year,” linebacker Fred Warner said. “You never know when your opportunity is going to come. He was obviously fully ready when his time came.” Tampa Bay tri...Latest news
