Stove wars: Republican-controlled House takes up bills to protect gas stoves

WASHINGTON (AP) — Venturing back into the nation’s culture wars, the Republican-controlled House is taking up legislation that GOP lawmakers say would protect gas stoves from overzealous government regulators.A bill approved Tuesday would prohibit use of federal funds to regulate gas stoves as a hazardous product, while a separate bill set for a vote Wednesday would block an Energy Department rule setting stricter energy efficiency standards for stovetops and ovens. Both bills were set for approval last week, but action was postponed after House conservatives staged a mini-revolt in retaliation for Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s leadership on a measure to raise the debt ceiling. Led by outspoken members of the House Freedom Caucus, 11 Republicans broke with their party on an otherwise routine procedural vote that threw the House schedule into disarray for a full week. McCarthy appeared to resolve the dispute late Monday after promising more meetings with GOP holdouts and seeki...Carlos Correa’s walk-off home run caps four-run rally as Twins beat Brewers

The Twins paid Carlos Correa handsomely this offseason to be the face of their franchise and the lifeblood of their team. And Tuesday night, he showed everyone just why that was.As soon as he connected with a changeup from Milwaukee all-star closer Devin Williams, the shortstop turned towards the Twins’ dugout, chucked his bat away and tapped his wrist. Amazingly, it was the first-career regular-season walk-off home run for the man who was known for his late postseason heroics in Houston. As he approached his home plate, Correa pulled up and tossed his helmet into the crowd of his teammates like a basketball before allowing himself to be mobbed by them. Correa’s home run capped a furious four-run rally — that took just 14 pitches — off of Williams to send the Twins to a 7-5 win over the Brewers on Tuesday night at Target Field.“You want this guy at the plate when it’s late innings and people are in scoring position or when you need to win,” rookie Edouard Julien said. “I felt pretty ...Woman sexually assaulted at popular Riverside hiking trail

NEW YORK (AP) — Drew Smith became the second New York Mets pitcher to get ejected this season for using an illegal foreign substance when he was tossed from the Subway Series opener Tuesday night against the Yankees at Citi Field. The reliever never even threw a pitch. He was checked by umpires as he entered in the top of the seventh inning with the Mets trailing by one run and never made it to the mound.“They said both of my hands were too sticky,” Smith said following his team’s 7-6 loss. “Really surprised, because I haven’t done anything different all year. Sweat and rosin. I don’t know what else to say. Nothing changed. It’s just, I think the process is so arbitrary. It can change from one crew to the other and I think that’s the main issue.”Smith was stopped for a routine check as he reached the infield. Within moments, several umpires and teammates were huddled around the right-hander, and Mets manager Buck Showalter came out of the dugout to join the discussion.
