Bassitt goes 8 strong for Jays, who improve playoff positioning in 7-1 win OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Former Athletics ace Chris Bassitt allowed one run in eight strong innings and the Toronto Blue Jays took sole possession of the third AL wild card spot with a 7-1 win over Oakland on Tuesday night.Toronto’s fifth win in six games moved the Blue Jays past the Rangers in the crowded AL playoff race. He tied Roger Clemens’ single-season franchise record with his ninth game of at least six scoreless innings, tops in the majors this season. The A’s traded Bassitt to the Mets on March 12, 2022 before the right-hander signed with the Blue Jays as a free agent nine months later.Bowden Francis recorded three consecutive strikeouts in the nint...

Shintaro Fujinami, Orioles’ seventh reliever of night, secures 5-4, 10-inning win over Angels

Shintaro Fujinami, Orioles’ seventh reliever of night, secures 5-4, 10-inning win over Angels Shintaro Fujinami hadn’t been trusted to pitch in high-leverage situations in more than two weeks.Manager Brandon Hyde had no choice Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Angels. After six relievers combined to blow two late leads, Hyde was forced to bring in the volatile reliever with a one-run lead in the 10th inning with All-Stars Félix Bautista and Yennier Cano unavailable — the former due to injury, the latter because of workload.Fujinami delivered. The Japanese right-hander stranded the automatic runner, striking out Nolan Schanuel to end the game and hand Baltimore a 5-4 win.Fujinami had the chance to record his second save of the season thanks to Jordan Westburg, whose RBI groundout scored zombie runner Austin Hays in the top half of the 10th.The victory is the Orioles’ 44th in come-from-behind fashion this season, and it maintained their 3 1/2-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays atop the American League standings. It’s their first win this year in w...

Will he go by plane or train? How Kim Jong Un may travel to Russia for another meeting with Putin

Will he go by plane or train? How Kim Jong Un may travel to Russia for another meeting with Putin SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s possible trip to Russia might be like his first one in 2019 — a rattling, 20-hour ride aboard a green-and-yellow armored train that is a quirky symbol of his family’s dynastic leadership. In what would be his first foreign travel since the start of the pandemic, United States officials say Kim may visit Russia this month for a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, possibly to advance talks on North Korean arms sales to refill Russian reserves drained by its war on Ukraine.According to U.S. reports, a potential venue for their meeting is the eastern city of Vladivostok, the site of their first meeting in April 2019, where Putin is expected to attend the annual Eastern Economic Forum that takes place on the campus of the Far Eastern Federal University from Sunday to Wednesday. How Kim, the 39-year-old authoritarian leader, would get there is a focus of media attention. While Kim has used planes more frequently than his...

Stark urban-rural divide emerges in tight Utah GOP special congressional primary race

Stark urban-rural divide emerges in tight Utah GOP special congressional primary race A distinct urban-rural divide left a Utah special congressional primary race between a Donald Trump critic and supporter too early to call Tuesday in a tight race that will likely produce the replacement for U.S. Rep. Chris Stewart. The GOP special primary to replace Stewart saw Celeste Maloy, who was Stewart’s chief legal counsel and has his endorsement, with a narrow lead over former state lawmaker Becky Edwards late Tuesday.Edwards, a Trump critic, was leading in two urban counties, but Maloy, a Trump supporter, overtook her with strength from rural areas. Votes yet to be counted included thousands of mail-in ballots over the next two weeks.Maloy told KUTV she knew it was too early to know if she would win but was happy to see rural counties in the district play such a key role in the results.“Look at the numbers in rural Utah, these are incredible,” Maloy said. “I’ve said this a lot: Rural Utah feels under-represented. They feel like people don’t show up.”After seeing her early l...

Fighting between rival US-backed groups in Syria could undermine war against the Islamic State group

Fighting between rival US-backed groups in Syria could undermine war against the Islamic State group BEIRUT (AP) — The weeklong clashes between rival U.S.-backed militias in eastern Syria, where hundreds of American troops are deployed, point to dangerous seams in the coalition that has kept a lid on the defeated Islamic State group for years. That could be an opportunity for the radical group to reemerge. The violence also points to rising tensions between Kurds who dominate the region and the mainly Arab population, opening the door for Syrian President Bashar Assad and his allies, Russia and Iran, to try to make inroads in an oil-rich territory where they seek to drive out U.S. troops and restore Damascus’ rule.Eastern Syria has largely been off the world’s radar, particularly in the United States. But the U.S. has had some 900 troops stationed there alongside an unknown number of contractors ever since the defeat of the Islamic State group in 2019. The troops, who first arrived eight years ago, work alongside the Syrian Democratic Forces, an umbrella group of militias dominated ...

Carmakers fail privacy test, give owners little or no control on personal data they collect

Carmakers fail privacy test, give owners little or no control on personal data they collect BOSTON (AP) — Cars are getting an “F” in data privacy. Most major manufacturers admit they may be selling your personal information, a new study finds, with half also saying they would share it with the government or law enforcement without a court order. The proliferation of sensors in automobiles — from telematics to fully digitized control consoles — has made them prodigious data-collection hubs. But drivers are given little or no control over the personal data their vehicles collect, researchers for the nonprofit Mozilla Foundation said Wednesday in their latest “Privacy Not Included” survey Security standards are also vague, a big concern given automakers’ track record of susceptibility to hacking. “Cars seem to have really flown under the privacy radar and I’m really hoping that we can help remedy that because they are truly awful,” said Jen Caltrider, the study’s research lead. “Cars have microphones and people have all kinds of sensitive conversations in them. Cars have camer...

Things to know about aid, lawsuits and tourism nearly a month after fire leveled a Hawaii community HONOLULU (AP) — Nearly a month after the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century killed at least 115 people, authorities on Maui are working their way through a list of the missing that has grown almost as quickly as names have been removed. Lawsuits are piling up in court over liability for the inferno, and businesses across the island are fretting about the loss of tourism. Government officials from Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen to President Joe Biden have pledged support, and thousands of people have been put up in hotels and elsewhere as they await clearance to visit and inspect the properties where they once lived. Here’s a look at things to know about how the recovery in Lahaina is taking shape following the Aug. 8 disaster: ___HOW MANY PEOPLE DIED?The official confirmed count stands at 115, a figure that has not changed since Aug. 21. Floods from tropical storm Haikui kill 2, displace thousands in China’s Fujian province BEIJING (AP) — At least two people have been killed and thousands forced to evacuate by floods brought by tropical storm Haikui in China’s southeastern coastal Fujian province, local authorities reported Wednesday. Schools were closed and flights suspended, while more than 30,000 people were moved to safety. Two firefighters died and one police officer is missing after flood waters carried away a fire engine on a rescue mission, state media reported. Haikui swept across Taiwan as a typhoon earlier this week, injuring dozens and leaving thousands of people without power. It weakened to a tropical storm when it made landfall in Fujian, but continued to bring record-breaking levels of rainfall. The worst affected area lies between the coast and inland mountains and is particularly prone to flooding, leading many over the decades to to migrate to other parts of China or move overseas. Authorities closed schools, suspended flights, stopped trains and buses, and dispatched dozens of emerg...

Michigan court to hear dispute over murder charge against ex-police officer who shot Black motorist GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — Lawyers for a former Michigan police officer are asking the state appeals court to throw out a murder charge in the killing of a Black motorist in 2022. The court is scheduled to hear arguments Wednesday in the case against Christopher Schurr, who shot Patrick Lyoya in the back of the head after a morning traffic stop in Grand Rapids turned into a short foot chase and vigorous struggle. In a filing, Schurr’s attorneys said lower courts wrongly applied the law to the circumstances of Lyoya’s death.“Officer Schurr reasonably believed a felony had occurred and reasonably believed that Lyoya had committed that felony, justifying his use of deadly force to prevent Lyoya from fleeing from arrest,” the defense team said. A judge in Grand Rapids last year found probable cause to send the second-degree murder case to the Kent County trial court. The evidence included video of the final moments when Schurr fired his gun while on top of Lyoya.Schurr, who i...
