Marques player: Junior has already scored 45 touchdowns

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 18:46:08 GMT

FAIRHAVEN – As the rain trickled down at Alumni Field, Justin Marques darted around the rain drops as if they were South Coast League tacklers.Rain drops, torrential rain, or even a Nor’easter doesn’t seem to have a chance to stop Marques from finding the end zone this season for the undefeated Blue Devils.Marques is a dual threat as a running back and linebacker for the 6-0 Fairhaven squadron. The junior captain has his sights set on a trip to Gillette after two consecutive first-round losses in the Blue Devils’ most recent state tournament runs.Marques has been destroying school records since his freshman year. He holds the single season touchdown record with 25 trips across the goal line in 2022, is tied for most touchdowns in a game with five and has accumulated 45 touchdowns with plenty of games left to play. The 45 touchdowns is already the career Fairhaven scoring record as Marques continues to slice up defenses like the pizza from Galaxy Pizza House down the road on Main Stre...

As Terrell Suggs prepares to enter Ravens Ring of Honor, teammates recall a ‘super raw’ rookie who was always the ‘life of the locker room’

As much as the sacks and the laurels, Terrell Suggs remembers the frustration, the times when he felt less self-assured than he seemed on the surface, the older co-workers who lent helping hands. From the long view, Suggs’ career was seamless: No. 10 pick after he set a single-season NCAA sack record at Arizona State, NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year at age 21, NFL Defensive Player of the Year at 29, Super Bowl champion at 30, Ravens institution by the time he played his 16th and final season in Baltimore. At halftime of Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions, Suggs will become the 12th Ravens player inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor.Put his first year as a Raven under the microscope, however, and the story is both messier and more interesting.“Yeah, you’re gonna get frustrated,” he said of his NFL beginning. “In college, you’re used to knowing everything you’re supposed to do, but when you get up there, you’re not top ...

Week 7 high school football preview: St. John’s Prep-Catholic Memorial battle figures to be a dandy

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 18:46:08 GMT

Something will give on Saturday when the team with the state’s longest winning streak squares off against a team which hasn’t lost against in-state competition since 2019.Defending Div. 1 state champion St. John’s Prep (6-0) has won 13 straight game since a 28-17 loss last Oct. 15 to the team it will host this weekend, Catholic Memorial (4-1). The last Massachusetts team to knock off the Knights were the Eagles (21-14) in the 2019 Div. 1 state championship game. There may be no love lost between the programs, but the level of respect they have for one another is off the chart. St. John’s Prep coach Brian St. Pierre and his Catholic Memorial counterpart, John DiBiaso, know this is going to be a gridiron battle.“They’re so talented on both sides of the ball as well as special teams,” St. Pierre said. “They’re tremendous up front and so well coached. They have players who are capable of putting you in a bind.”St. John’s Prep might not have the s...

Justin Tucker had made field goals to win the AFC championship game and give the Ravens a cushion in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl. He was the most accurate kicker in NFL history, already talked about as the rare specialist worthy of selection to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.He didn’t need a signature moment, but he had a chance to create one as he lined up to kick a 66-yard field goal at Detroit’s Ford Field on the afternoon of Sept. 26, 2021.The Ravens will play the Lions again Sunday. The last time they did, Tucker put his stamp on football history. His field goal set a record and handed the Ravens a victory. More than that, it gave the New York Times Magazine and “60 Minutes” a hook as they lined up to profile Tucker, proclaiming him the greatest ever at his unusual trade.“Look, I’d be lying to you if I said I didn’t put a lot of value on that particular kick,” Tucker said Thursday. “It was a special moment for all of ...

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Protesters marched from several mosques to the heavily guarded U.S. Embassy in Indonesia’s capital Friday to denounce the staunch American support for Israel and demand an end to Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip.Similar protests also took place in front of the United Nations mission, a few kilometers (miles) from the embassy, and in the compound of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Authorities estimated that about 1,000 people participated in the rallies across Jakarta following Friday prayers in the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation.A brutal incursion into southern Israel by Hamas fighters on Oct. 7 provoked Israel to declare war against the militant group that rules Gaza. The Israeli siege of and airstrikes on the Palestinian territory were the focus earlier this week of demonstrations at Egyptian universities, inside a congressional office building in Washington, outside the Israeli Embassy in Bogota and near the U.S. Embas...
