Denver Post Broncos writer Parker Gabriel posts his Broncos Mailbag weekly during the season and periodically during the offseason. Click here to submit a question. In your estimation, has it been the offense, defense or combination of both that’s turned the Broncos season around?— Ed Helinski, Albany, N.Y.Hey Ed, thanks for getting us going this week. It’s never exactly one or the other — and, while we’re at it, don’t sleep on the role Marvin Mims Jr. and the Broncos return game has played or Wil Lutz’s five field goals Sunday night against Minnesota. At the risk of oversimplifying, the defense is where we start regardless of the perspective you want to choose. Either the defense has spurred the turnaround or it’s the reason for the heinous start. Both, really, are reasonable answers. Consider that the Broncos’ offense averaged 21.5 points per game over the team’s 1-5 start. Over the four-game winning streak, they’ve averaged… 22 points per game. The defense, meanwhile, g...Opinion: Polis for president, or at least a hard-fought primary

With our next presidential election just a year away, American democracy faces a crisis: The political system seems likely to give us a choice between two candidates whom Americans don’t want to vote for.At a time when our democratic traditions are already being threatened, the prospect of a general election between Joe Biden and Donald Trump — with polls showing that some 65% of voters are opposed to both men — seems likely to increase the public’s despair about our way of government. For the good of the country, as a patriotic act, somebody should step up to change this unhappy picture. And a man from Colorado could be the one to do it.In short: Gov. Jared Polis should run for president in 2024.There are two reasons why Polis should make this gutsy move.First, a challenge to Biden from a serious, respected contender could galvanize the Democratic Party to do what its leaders know they ought to do: find a presidential candidate who has a better chance to win than the unpopular 80-ye...Officers injured in pursuit crash on 57 Freeway; NB lanes closed in Fullerton

We cannot ignore the mounting civilian death toll in Gaza. The victims are not abstractions, nor are they the inevitable collateral damage of a just war. They are the result of choices Israeli leadership has made on how to pursue this just war.To be sure, Hamas holds primary responsibility for this war and its casualties, having committed the horrific atrocities on Oct. 7 that provoked Israel’s response. Hamas also puts civilians in harm’s way by placing operations and facilities amid critical civilian infrastructure — which is a war crime. But as an American citizen and U.S. foreign policy professional, my question is: What can the United States do to mitigate civilian harm and help secure peace? The U.S. government has and must continue to condemn the acts of Hamas. But America’s leverage is over Israel, so that is where it can make a difference in this war.Principal weapons supplierThe United States has no relationship with Hamas, having designated it a terrorist organization since...Monarch butterfly numbers down again, but no reason to panic … yet

PACIFIC GROVE — Monarch butterfly numbers are down this year entering prime counting season, but experts aren’t panicking yet.“Butterfly populations are bouncy,” said Isis Howard, an endangered species conservation biologist at the Xerces Society. “The monarch butterfly life cycle is unique in that they have multiple generations present at one time. The super generation’s success is reliant on the previous generation’s success.”And with last year’s winter storms, she says it likely impacted the breeding population of monarchs, hence the lower numbers. Animals can behave differently year after year, meaning there may be more on the way. “It’s a little early to tell. There might always be a late wave of monarchs.”The western monarch butterfly is the species that earned Pacific Grove the name of Butterfly Town, U.S.A. Unlike the eastern monarch butterfly, they migrate between northern states like Washington, Oregon, and Idaho before coming to roost in temperate California for the winte...Latest news
