Coastal communities in Southern California are bracing for potential flooding from Hurricane Hilary, which is expected to make landfall as a tropical storm this weekend.Hilary, which is churning off the Pacific coast of Mexico, is expected to reach California on Sunday as a tropical storm with heavy rain and large ocean swells. “Rainfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches, with isolated amounts of 10 inches, are expected across portions of southern California and southern Nevada, which would lead to significant and rare impacts,” the National Weather Service said. “Elsewhere across portions of the Western United States, rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected.”Tropical Storm advisories on Aug. 18, 2023, as Hurricane Hilary approaches Southern California. A Marine who was assigned as a student to the School of Infantry-West died during a training exercise at Camp Pendleton Thursday, officials said.The unidentified Marine was participating in a night live-fire training at the base, according to spokesman Major Joshua J. At least one Los Angeles Police Department officer opened fire in Watts Friday morning, striking a man police say was armed with a gun.At about 6:40 a.m. in an alley in the 2100 block of East 103rd Street, an armed man was reportedly waving his handgun around in the alley, according to Lt. (KRON) -- A man was hospitalized following a shooting Thursday night near the East Palo Alto Library, according to police. Just before 8:30 p.m., officers responded to 2415 University Avenue after a ShotSpotter activation detected at least five shots. They found a man with apparent gunshot wounds to his upper torso area, police said.
