Germany steps up surveillance of far-right party affiliates BERLIN (AP) — Germany’s domestic intelligence agency BfV said Wednesday it had concluded that three organizations linked to the country’s biggest far-right party had “extremist” goals that were in breach of the German constitution. The announcement means that the agency can formally step up its surveillance of the youth wing of the Alternative for Germany, known as the Young Alternative, the Institute for State Politics and the group One Percent. The BfV said its investigation had shown that the Young Alternative rejected the integration of immigrants from outside Europe based on “biological” assumptions and portrayed Muslims in general negatively. It expressed similar concerns about the Institute for State Politics and One Percent.Alternative for Germany has so far failed in its legal bids to block security agencies from observing the party and its affiliates.Germany’s top security official, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, accused the so-called New Right of trying t...

Why your grocery prices are getting tougher to predict

Why your grocery prices are getting tougher to predict If you look at the numbers, you’ll see that inflation is falling quickly. Grocery prices are falling too, but they’re still well above the overall inflation rate, and that makes prices three or six months down the line much tougher to predict.Dr. Kelleen Wiseman is the Academic Director of the Master of Food and Resource Economics program at the University of British Columbia, and one of the authors of the Canada’s Food Price Report for 2023. She joins us to discuss what the report tells us about current and future grocery inflation.“[Production] prices went up, and yes we had a spike in the future prices, then they went down, but our food prices didn’t,” she said, “that means that there is an impact, but not a long-term impact.”So with food prices no longer so closely indexed to inflation, and climate change and a volatile geopolitical situation only increasing—are we just left to hope for the best, and plan for the worst? You can subscribe to The Big Story podcast on Apple Po...

Freddie Mercury’s eclectic collection of ‘clutter’ for sale LONDON (AP) — He was the king of Queen and his crown could be yours — for the right price.Freddie Mercury’s extensive collection of costumes, fine art, and even handwritten working lyrics for “We Are the Champions” and “Killer Queen” will be auctioned in September.Queen’s frontman had said he wanted to live a Victorian life surrounded by “exquisite clutter,” and he left it all to his close friend, Mary Austin, when he died, at 45, of AIDS-related pneumonia in 1991.Austin, who has kept most of it the way Mercury left it in his home in the upscale Kensington neighborhood of London, said she had reached the “difficult decision” that it was time to sell it all, Sotheby’s said.Artwork includes prints or works on paper by Picasso and Matisse. “Type of Beauty,” a painting by 19th century French artist James Tissot of his Irish muse and lover Kathleen Newton, is estimated to sell for 400,000 to 600,000 pounds ($500,000-750,000) — the highest of any item listed in press mat...

McCarthy struggles for debt bill votes, makes late changes WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans made post-midnight changes to their sweeping debt ceiling package to win over holdouts, as Speaker Kevin McCarthy pushed ahead Wednesday with plans to launch debate and round up support from his slim majority for a vote this week.Facing a revolt from Midwestern Republicans over doing away with biofuel tax credits that were just passed into law last year by President Joe Biden, Republicans relented and allowed the tax credits to stay on the books. Republicans also agreed to more quickly launch the bolstered work requirements for recipients of government aid, starting in 2024 as proposed by another holdout, Freedom Caucus’ Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., who has led previous challenges to McCarthy. The changes were approved at a 2 a.m. session of the House Rules Committee despite earlier repeated insistence by McCarthy and his leadership team that there would be no changes. The floor debate is expected to launch at noon Wednesday, a final vote on the ...

Pirates' move puts White Sox in the salary spotlight CHICAGO — There was a transaction by the Pirates on Tuesday that might have caught the attention of White Sox fans before another disappointment on the field. Ahead of the team's 7-0 loss to the Blue Jays in Toronto, Pittsburgh signed outfielder Bryan Reynolds to an eight-year, $106.75 million deal. It's the Pirates' first contract over $100 million in their team's history as they've gotten off to a surprising 16-8 start to the season. By doing that, it put the White Sox in a more unique category in Major League Baseball, one that would come off more negative than positive for fans. The club is now just one of three in the league to never have signed a player to a $100 million contract, per MLB.com. As of early in the 2023 season, the club's biggest free agent contract was given to outfielder Andrew Benintendi, who got a five-year, $75 million deal this past offseason. As far as a contract extension goes, Yoan Moncada has the White Sox record at $70 million for five years, which he w...
