CHICAGO — The second City Series in 2023 hit during the "Dog Days of Summer," and that took on literal meaning at Wrigley Field on Wednesday. That's because an organization was hoping to find some canines a new home, doing so with the Cubs' help in a time of need. With the shelters filling up with animals over the summer months, PAWS Chicago held an adoption day in conjunction with the MLB franchise on Wednesday ahead of the second game between the Cubs and the White Sox. The idea was done with the aid of Lindsay Hawkins, the wife of Cubs general manager Carter Hawkins, and Emma Hendricks, the wife of pitcher Kyle Hendricks. "They had come through PAWS in the last year and they wanted to get more deeply involved," said PAWS Chicago CEO Susanna Wickham. "So they approached us about creating this event."For it, the organization brought six dogs for adoption to the event with Cubs-themed names: Gallagher, Hawkins, Hendricks, Ivy, Swanson, and Wrigley. A woman is recovering after being bitten by a snake outside her mother's Wildomar home earlier this week. The woman's mother, Denise Silva, told KTLA her daughter still has a lot of swelling and is in a lot of pain after the red diamond rattlesnake bit her on her toe. The daughter, Tonya, was walking up to the home Tuesday when the snake struck. "She shook her foot and it went back underneath," Silva explained. Tonya's toe immediately started swelling and she went to the hospital."We didn't know if it was a rattlesnake, or if it was not venomous," Silva said. Silva's grandson, meanwhile, fended off the snake until Ryan Jessup of Ryan’s Rattlesnake Rescue responded to the home. The reptiles are usually docile and won't strike unless they feel threatened, but this one might have been already on defensive due to an injury it appeared to have, Jessup said. Most likely, it was just looking for some shade. "With the heat that’s going on, that’s what snakes are doing now, in search of shade...2 strong-arm robbery suspects arrested

The victim in the second instance gave authorities an identical suspect description. “Based on witness statements and evidence at the scene, it appeared the two robberies were related,” the release stated. With Hurricane Hilary likely to hit Southern California as either a weak Category 1 hurricane or a tropical storm, meteorologists are revisiting some of the previous tropical cyclones to hit the Golden State in recorded history. There haven’t been many. Thanks to cooler ocean water temperatures and a semi-permanent high-pressure system, storms rarely gain or maintain enough strength to make landfall as a tropical storm or a hurricane in California. On the few occasions when they have, they originated south of the United States and traveled northward. The 1939 Long Beach Tropical StormSeptember 1939 saw the only tropical storm to make landfall in California in the twentieth century. The storm began as a tropical depression off the coast of Panama and quickly grew into a hurricane.“The lowest pressure (28.67") occurred on September 22, when the storm was centered approximately 300 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas,” according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).T...Retail Theft Task Force Introduced In Los Angeles
