Man hospitalized after Winnetka water rescue WINNETKA, Ill. -- A man was rushed to a hospital in Evanston after a reported water rescue in Winnetka Tuesday.According to authorities, Winnetka's police and fire departments responded to a call at Elder Beach before 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Man in critical condition after pulled from Lincoln Park lagoon First responders report an adult male, who was part of a boating group on the lakefront, had jumped into the water to assist some kids that were tubing, struggled to swim, and drowned.He was pulled back onto the boat and CPR was started immediately. Valley Park extends budget for 2 weeks, continuing city services VALLEY PARK, Mo. - One day after Valley Park citizens noticed a disruption of city services over a local financial crisis, the board of aldermen extended the prior budget while the leadership works on a budget for the current fiscal year.On Monday, residents who visited city hall throughout the day were met with an empty parking lot and locked doors.Residents said they were kept in the dark about why services had been suspended. Only later did they learn of the budget crisis. The Valley Park Board of Aldermen had failed to pass a budget before July 1, which is the start of the 2024 fiscal year. Roundup Fire breaks out in San Bernardino County A brush fire ignited in San Bernardino County late Tuesday morning.The blaze, called the Roundup Fire, was reported by the San Bernardino County Fire Department at 11:50 a.m., and it began near Rattlesnake Canyon east of Hesperia and south of Apple Valley, the agency said on Twitter. Cal Fire reported at about 1:15 p.m. that the fire had grown to 5 acres, though about 10 minutes later, that figure was 15 acres.By 1:35 p.m., fire officials said it had grown to 31 acres.Smoke from the fire is "visible from across the high desert," fire officials added, though the rate of spread is slow.

L.A. County man found dead in state prison; authorities investigating possible homicide by fellow inmate  The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is investigating the death of an incarcerated man in North Kern State Prison. According to a release from the CDCR, an officer conducting a welfare check of the prison's Reception Center approached a cell occupied by 25-year-old Ricardo Saldivar and 47-year-old Peter Valencia around 2:08 p.m. Monday afternoon and found Saldivar unresponsive. Responding staff immediately initiated lifesaving measures, but Saldivar was pronounced deceased in the prison’s triage and treatment area at 2:19 p.m., police said. The Kern County Coroner has not yet determined Saldivar’s official cause of death, but it is being investigated as a homicide. According to a release from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, an officer conducting a welfare check found 25-year-old Ricardo Saldivar (right) unresponsive in his cell on Monday, July 3, 2023.
