Kurtenbach: The 49ers’ new-look defense was already impressive. It’s about to get even better SANTA CLARA — Nick Bosa’s preseason-long holdout ended on a Wednesday. The following Sunday, he played more than half of the Niners’ defensive snaps against the Steelers. One Sunday later, he played 79 percent of the Niners’ snaps. Four days after that, another 78 percent. That’s a lot of snaps to play after coming in cold. And while Bosa played well — one sack, seven tackles, with two for a loss — the soon-to-be 26-year-old defensive end said Wednesday that he underestimated the challenge of revving up the engine.“Just getting thrown right into football, I was feeling it,” Bosa said. “I think my body is adapted to football now.”That’s a scary thought if you’re Arizona Cardinals quarterback Josh Dobbs, who will come to the South Bay to play the Niners on Sunday. In fact, it should scare anyone on the 49ers’ schedule and any team interested in playing in the NFC playoffs.Related ArticlesSan Francisco 49ers | Kur...

How the Warriors could be surprisingly impacted by the Damian Lillard trade The NBA had at least one more blockbuster trade to complete before the 2023 season began. Golden State wasn’t directly involved, but the big swap will surely impact the team this year and beyond.All-Star Damian Lillard will join forces with former MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks in a three-team trade featuring Milwaukee, the Portland Trail Blazers and the Phoenix Suns. Former Suns center Deandre Ayton and Bucks guard Jrue Holiday move to Portland along with a 2019 draft pick and two pick swaps as part of the deal, while center Jusuf Nurkic and guard Grayson Allen move to the Suns. For the Warriors, though, the trade will impact their short- and long-term roster plans.Steph Curry has long praised Holiday as the toughest defender he has played against, and reports indicate the Blazers are open to moving Holiday for assets. With Holiday in the last season of his four-year contract with a player option for next season, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Warriors check in to see wha...

Winless Broncos put historic loss in rearview as they prepare for basement brawl with Bears ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — How do the Denver Broncos go about getting over their 50-point blowout at Miami? The same way they went about recovering from their one-point loss to the Raiders in their opener.“Any loss is tough, but you’ve got to be professional about it, you’ve got to be able to move on, you’ve got to be able to focus on what the task is at hand,” Russell Wilson said Wednesday after the Broncos (0-3) began preparations for their basement battle with the Chicago Bears (0-3), another team in crisis mode and in search of both answers and their first win.Win, lose or tie, NFL players are conditioned to watching the video and making corrections the next day, getting away from it all on their day off and then showing back up on Wednesday looking ahead, not behind. So, the mood in the locker room after what coach Sean Payton called a spirited practice was no different coming off the Broncos’ 70-20 backbreaker than it was coming back from their 17-16 heartb...

Ezekiel Elliott focuses on Patriots knowing emotions may flow in homecoming with Cowboys FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Ezekiel Elliott knows it will be weird to return so soon as a New England running back to the place where he starred alongside quarterback Dak Prescott for seven seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. The two-time rushing champion also knows he has always had a handle on his emotions, a trait that will be tested assuming there’s a massive roar from more than 90,000 fans who used to howl “Zeeeeeeeeke,” as their beloved back turned his hand in front of his mouth in a “feed me” gesture after first-round runs.Elliott returns to the home of the Cowboys on Sunday, confident he can keep the focus on football but knowing he hasn’t stepped into such a scene before.“There are emotions,” Elliott said Wednesday in a conference call with reporters who cover the Cowboys. “I may do a good job of hiding them, but there will be some emotions. But I’ve got to go out there and help my team win that football game.”Elliott wasn’t much interested in rehashing his off...

Russia accuses US of promoting ties between Israel and Arabs before Israeli-Palestinian peace deal

Russia accuses US of promoting ties between Israel and Arabs before Israeli-Palestinian peace deal UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Russia accused the United States on Wednesday of promoting Israel’s normalization of relations with Arab nations and circumventing the Arab Peace Initiative launched by Saudi Arabia in 2002, which calls for a settlement to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict before any diplomatic recognition of Israel. The statement by Russia’s U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia at the U.N. Security Council’s monthly meeting on the Mideast also implicitly criticized Saudi Arabia — without naming it — for moving toward establishing diplomatic relations with Israel while taking “aggressive illegal actions” including an “unprecedented” expansion of settlements on territory that is supposed to be part of an independent Palestinian state.Nebenzia said U.S. efforts to normalize Arab-Israeli relations at a time that the “de facto” international legal framework for an Israeli-Palestinian peace settlement is being dismantled not only circumvents the “logic” of the Arab Peace Initiative, but i...

Lionel Messi ruled out for Inter Miami’s US Open Cup final match FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Lionel Messi was not on Inter Miami’s roster for the U.S. Open Cup final against Houston on Wednesday night, marking the fourth match for club and country that he’s missed in recent weeks while dealing with some sort of leg issue. And it’s unclear if Messi will continue to be sidelined with Inter Miami resumes its push to make Major League Soccer’s playoffs this weekend. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner was subbed out of a match against Toronto on Sept. 20 in the first half because of a leg issue, and did not play in the team’s 1-1 draw at Orlando on Sunday. That was the third match he missed in its entirety — two for club, one for country — in the last two weeks, and missing a final on Wednesday suggests the problem could be worse than the team has suggested. Also out for Wednesday: Jordi Alba, another of Inter Miami’s celebrated midseason acquisitions. Alba has a leg injury and his status for upcoming matches is unknown. The ...
