LAS VEGAS (AP) — Until now, Jack Eichel has only watched the NHL playoffs, which has given him some idea of the intensity that comes once the 16-team tournament begins. But the eight-year veteran who has played in 476 regular-season games won’t really know what it will feel like until he skates onto the T-Mobile Arena ice Tuesday night. That’s when the Vegas Golden Knights, who own the home ice advantage in the Western Conference playoffs, open their seven-game, first-round series against the Winnipeg Jets.“He’s waited a long time for this,” Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said.Eichel played his first six seasons with the Buffalo Sabres, who drafted him second overall in 2015. He scored at least 24 goals in each of his first five seasons, signed an eight-year, $80 million contract in October 2017 and, exactly a year later, was named team captain. But Eichel’s time in Buffalo ended on a sour note after he and the club disagreed on how to treat his neck injury. Josh Hart’s clutch play saves Knicks in Game 1 win over Donovan Mitchell, Cavs

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 20:00:31 GMT

CLEVELAND — Josh Hart came to the rescue. With his team collapsing in the fourth quarter — falling to the might of Donovan Mitchell — Hart, a player certainly not known for his offense, found himself with the ball and the shot clock dwindling.Hart had no choice. He needed to make a play for himself. So he took a step back with his dribble and buried a 3-pointer, highlighting a heroic performance from the Game 1 thriller for the Knicks in their 101-97 win over the Cavs.Hart’s bucket changed the momentum with 1:46 remaining, with the Cavs taking the lead on the previous possession for the first time since the opening quarter. But the Knicks still needed to close out the victory. They accomplished that through their bread-and-butter — offensive rebounding — with Julius Randle and Isaiah Hartenstein picking up huge extra possessions in the final minute.Despite Mitchell’s 38 points, Round 1 went to the Knicks. It was the first NBA playoff game in C...

Rafael Devers, Yu Chang, Kenley Jansen power in Red Sox bizarre comeback win

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 20:00:31 GMT

“Today is a reminder that we are all Boston Strong. This is the time of year for hope. This is the time of year for Boston.”These sentiments were part of a moving pre-game ceremony centered on the 10th anniversary of the Boston Marathon Bombing and Major League Baseball’s annual Jackie Robinson Day.It just hasn’t been a very hopeful time for this Red Sox pitching staff.Boston’s starting rotation has allowed more home runs than any other team’s, and they’re the only team in the majors without at least one start longer than five innings. But buoyed by a sold-out Fenway, an unusual amount of catcher’s interference, and some clutch hits, the Red Sox took Game 2 of the series, 9-7, coming from behind twice before Kenley Jansen slammed the door. It was Jansen’s second save of the series, allowing him to tie Craig Kimbrel for seventh in MLB history.Taking the mound for the second contest of this seven-game homestand, Nick Pivetta only lasted four in...

From absurd to inappropriate: Torontonians weigh in on plans for Ontario Place

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 20:00:31 GMT

The Ford government has unveiled its vision while Toronto mayoral candidates have weighed in with their thoughts, and on Saturday local residents had their say when it comes to the future development of Ontario Place. A few hundred people – many belonging to a group called “Ontario Place For All” – attended a public consultation at the Beanfield Centre on the Exhibition grounds to express concerns about access to the waterfront being cut off as a result of future redevelopment. “I swim there regularly, I ride my bike there regularly, I just hang out there regularly, so that’s my concern – that it remains public use,” said one attendee. “To have public access, to be able to on a Sunday afternoon stop and they might have taco trucks or I’ll go to a concert or a movie or something – that’s absolutely essential,” said another who attended the meeting. A sore point with many who attended is the proposed spa being built with concerns...

Sudan’s army and rival force battle, killing at least 27

KHARTOUM, Sudan (AP) — Sudan’s military and a powerful paramilitary force battled fiercely Saturday in the capital and other areas, reportedly causing more than 200 deaths and injuries while dealing a new blow to hopes for a transition to democracy and raising fears of a wider conflict. The country’s doctors’ syndicate said late Saturday that at least 27 people had been killed and more than 180 wounded. But the Sudan Doctor’s Syndicate added that there many uncounted casualties, including military and RSF personnel in the western Darfur region and the northern town of Merowe. The clashes capped months of heightened tensions between the armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces group. Those tensions had delayed a deal with political parties to get the country back to its short-lived transition to democracy, which was derailed by an October 2021 military coup. After a day of heavy fighting, the military ruled out negotiations with the RSF, instead calling for the dismantling of what it...

B.C. and federal government announce settlement with group of First Nations

VANCOUVER — The Canadian government says it’s righting nearly a century of wrongs done to five First Nations in British Columbia by settling historic land claims owed under an 1899 treaty. Federal Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Marc Miller said during an announcement Saturday that Ottawa failed to live up to its obligations to the Blueberry River First Nation, the Doig River First Nation, the Halfway River First Nation, the Saulteau First Nation and the West Moberly First Nation for more than 100 years. Miller says the broken promises following Treaty 8 resulted in decades of negotiations to resolve historic land debts owed by the Crown. He says the feds will kick in $800 million as monetary compensation under the settlement, noting it’s owed to the First Nations and not free money.B.C. Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation Murray Rankin says the province will provide 443 square kilometres of Crown land under the settlement to the five First Nations.Mi...
