National Cathedral replaces windows honoring Confederacy with stained-glass homage to racial justice

The landmark Washington National Cathedra l unveiled new stained-glass windows Saturday with a theme of racial justice, filling the space that had once held four windows honoring Confederate Gens. Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson.The new windows depict a march for justice by African Americans, descendants of the very people who would have remained in slavery after the Civil War if the side for which the officers fought had prevailed. The cathedral had removed the old windows after Confederate symbols featured prominently in recent racist violence. The dedication service was attended by many clergy from the Washington area’s historically Black churches, as well as leaders of social justice organizations. CHICAGO -- An 86-year-old man is dead after he was suffered a gunshot wound in Auburn Gresham Saturday morning. According to police, the man was discovered near the 8100 block of South Throop Street with a gunshot wound to the thigh. He was transported to Christ Hospital in critical condition. He was pronounced dead shortly after. (KTLA) – Security cameras captured the moment a valuable Buddha statue worth $1.5 million was stolen from a Los Angeles art gallery earlier this month.The bronze statue, weighing 250 pounds, dates back to Japan’s Edo Period (1603-1867), according to the operators of the Barakat Gallery in Beverly Grove. AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man was sentenced to 15 years in state prison on a first-degree murder charge in connection with a November 2020 incident at a northwest Austin car dealership.According to Travis County court documents, Modesto Hernandez-Hernandez, 33, was convicted and sentenced Sept. 7.The murder charge was related to the Nov. 6, 2020, shooting death of 61-year-old Jerry Paul Lee, an employee at the car dealership on Ranch Road 2222. AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man was sentenced to five years deferred adjudication Sept. 8 in connection with an Aug. 8, 2022, incident.According to court documents, Brandon Munoz, 38, was charged with aggravated kidnapping with a deadly weapon.In Texas, deferred adjudication is a type of probation, which gives the person sentenced the opportunity to keep the conviction off their criminal record. The Bayport City Council will hold a special workshop on Monday afternoon to discuss the relocation of Andersen Elementary School.Andersen Elementary, built in 1919, is one of the oldest school buildings in the Stillwater Area Public School District, and district officials have been looking at building a new school in either Bayport or Baytown Township.Bayport officials want to keep a school within city limits, and the proposed location is Barker’s Alps Park on the western edge of the city. The city of Bayport started leasing the Barker’s Alps land, formerly part of the Minnesota State prison farm lands, from the state in the 1970s and purchased the 48-acre parcel in 1985.
