PITTSBURGH — Somebody had to blink. It turns out it was Kyle Freeland. He lost a pitcher’s duel to Pirates right-hander Mitch Keller, who was magnificent as he pitched a complete-game shutout in Pittsburgh’s 2-0 win Monday night at PNC Park.Freeland escaped traffic jams via double plays in the first, third, fifth and sixth innings. But all Freeland could do in the seventh inning was watch Rodolfo Castro’s two-run homer sneak over the center-field wall. That was all Pittsburgh needed. The Pirates snapped a seven-game losing streak while the Rockies lost for just the second time in their last eight games. The Pirates’ Connor Joe, the former Rockies, led off the seventh with a single to right, setting up Castro’s homer. Castro hammered Freeland’s 0-1, upper-middle, 90.1 mph fastball for his fourth homer of the season.Related ArticlesColorado Rockies | Rockies’ Bud Black remembers Vida Blue with a New York Post headline Colora...Family grieves 54-year-old San Bernardino man shot, killed in road-rage incident

"He had a sense of humor, enjoyed his cooking, enjoyed his family,” Sanchez’s mother, Mary Louise Sanchez, said of her son. “He was happy at his job, enjoyed working with those special needs kids.” The 54-year-old, who she called Andy, had also become her caretaker in recent years. The fatal shooting occurred on Feb. 28 near the intersection of 5th Street and Tippecanoe Avenue in Highland. Officers with the Highland Police Department responded to the scene on reports of assault with a deadly and found the Sanchez in his vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound. Striking teachers say it’s for the ‘common good’

With just 13 days left in the school year, most Oakland classrooms remained empty Monday as striking teachers walked the picket line for a third day — but the impasse is no longer focused on money or benefits.Instead, the Oakland Unified School District and the teachers’ union, the Oakland Education Association, are locked in a dispute over the teachers’ so-called “common good” demands, which seek to address racial equity, homelessness and environmental justice for students across the city. The demands — which include using closed school sites to house homeless students and creating a committee to coordinate reparations for Black students — are not issues that historically have kept children out of the classroom. Now, the dispute is even dividing the six members of the Oakland Unified school board itself: On Monday morning, board members Valarie Bachelor, VanCedric Williams, and Jennifer Brouhard urged the rest of the board to allow the district’s bargaining te...NHL Draft Lottery: Sharks didn’t win, but they also dodged a bullet

LOS ANGELES — The Warriors will trot out their third different starting lineup in four games against the Los Angeles Lakers.Gary Payton II, who has been largely out of the rotation in the first three games, will get the starting nod alongside the usuals — Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Green at center.“Five years ago we wouldn’t have changed the lineup unless there was an injury,” head coach Steve Kerr said. With all the game-to-game adjustments, things have changed now. The Lakers adjusted in their Game 3 win by having Austin Reaves defend Curry and Jarred Vanderbilt defend Green which, in essence, limited the pick-and-roll opportunities for the Warriors. Starting Payton can be the Warriors’ defensive counter by limiting D’Angelo Russell’s scoring opportunities; Russell scored 13 points in the first quarter last game.“Obviously his defense is excellent,” Kerr said. “He plays like a big but he ...You won’t believe how much Americans bet in the last 5 years

By Wayne Parry | Associated PressATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Americans have bet over $220 billion on sports with legal gambling outlets in the five years since the U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for all 50 states to offer it, and the industry shows few signs of slowing despite some recent scandals that have put a spotlight on wagering safeguards. When Sunday’s anniversary of the court ruling in a case brought by New Jersey arrives, two-thirds of the country will offer legal sports betting, with additional states likely to join in coming months or years. The fast-growing industry is also far-reaching: its advertisements reach into most U.S. homes during sporting events and even non-sports programming. Few TV viewers have been spared from repeated ads featuring a Caesar character discussing sports gambling with members of the Manning football dynasty, or from actor Jamie Foxx placing sports bets in between takes on a film set.“While the milestones of legalized sports betting t...Man shot in groin area during one of two Oakley shootings reported minutes apart: police
