Editorial: Was taking McClain’s killers to trial the right thing to do?

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 23:37:19 GMT

Coloradans have known one heartbreaking truth for four long years: Without the aggressive and callous actions of three Aurora police officers and two paramedics, Elijah McClain would be alive today. And now, after the first prosecutor on the case refused to take the homicide to trial, Coloradans know another truth: There was not enough evidence to convince a jury that two of those officers’ actions were criminal. Only Aurora police officer Randy Roedema was convicted, and even then, jurors found him guilty of the lesser charges he faced — criminally negligent homicide and third-degree assault. As we await the trial of the two paramedics who injected McClain as he lay restrained and unconscious on the ground with an overdose of ketamine, Coloradans may begin to wonder if the initial prosecutor, District Attorney Dave Young, was correct in his decision not to press charges. Was this outcome really worth the time, effort, and expense put forth by Colorado’s Attorney General Phil We...

Finally, a make-ahead turkey that’s ready to travel

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 23:37:19 GMT

By Melissa Clark, The New York TimesIn a perfect world, you’d always be able to serve your Thanksgiving turkey directly after its sojourn in the oven. It’s the best way to take advantage of the bird’s crisp juiciness and meaty aroma — not to mention a chance to hide in the kitchen from football games. But what if you have to drive your cooked turkey an hour away to a Friendsgiving? Or you need room in your oven for pie? Or you’d simply prefer to wake up on Thursday morning secure in the knowledge that the trickiest part of your feast is already waiting for you in the fridge?Whatever the reason, there are times when you need a killer make-ahead turkey recipe, and I’ve found the way.It took several weeks of testing and a dozen birds to get the result I wanted: a reheated turkey that tastes very nearly as good as it did right after roasting, with a juicy breast, tender dark meat and glistening, crispy skin.It also had to be food safe — because Thanksgiving is stressful enoug...

A cause of death has not yet been revealed. Barry, a former federal judge and longtime ally of her younger brother Donald, eventually had a “significant fissure” with him after their niece, Mary L. Trump, released audio recordings of Maryanne “speaking critically” of the president, NYT said.  Donald Trump Jr. returns to the stand as defense looks to undercut New York civil fraud claims She retired from her position as Senior Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in 2019 after an investigation into her family’s tax practices. Her second husband, veteran trial lawyer John J. Wanderlust, the UK travel magazine, has just announced its readers’ choice awards in categories that range from “most desirable” — Britspeak, we think, for “ooooh!” — country, region and island to emerging destinations and top spots for gastronomy, wildlife and culture. With each category divided into global and European-centric lists, there’s enough here to inspire scores of vacations. The most desirable region in the world, Wanderlust’s readers have declared, is British Columbia, followed by the Galapagos Islands and California. The most delicious country is, of course, Italy —  and the most appealing destination for wildlife lovers is Costa Rica. And the most desirable islands list circles the globe, from Cuba to Sri Lanka and the Philippines archipelago. Some spots are so remote, we had to look them up — and we still don’t know where they are. Turns out there are multiple Saint Helena islands, including a Brit...

Travel Troubleshooter: British Airways owes me a credit for a canceled flight from 2020

DEAR TRAVEL TROUBLESHOOTER: British Airways canceled my flight from Baltimore to London in 2020. The airline sent me an email that said I could either get a refund or a flight credit and that I had until the end of this year to decide.Christopher Elliott, the Travel Troubleshooter However, after calling British Airways numerous times, they claim they don’t have any record of the flight.I paid for this flight with a combination of miles and cash. I’d like a refund of my 150,000 points as well as the $770 in taxes. Can you help me?— Louis Hyman, BaltimoreANSWER: It’s highly unusual for an airline to lose a reservation like this. But a look at your correspondence suggests that’s exactly what happened. You had a ticket, and then British Airways somehow lost it. Now the airline wants to keep your points and the cash you paid for other taxes and fees.Normally, you would be able to send British Airways proof of your reservation, and it would then fix the ...
