Doncic, Irving believe full season with Mavs will make encore better than debut that flopped

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 18:47:08 GMT

DALLAS (AP) — The first preseason together for Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving will include long flights overseas and a herky-jerky schedule with fewer games than usual for the Dallas Mavericks. They’ll take that over the rushed effort for the All-Star pairing to click last season after the blockbuster trade, which went bust when the Mavericks faded late and missed the playoffs a year after reaching the Western Conference finals.“It was so quick last year,” Irving said. “There was so much pressure on us to win now, win big. ‘It’s Luka and Kyrie. Why can’t you guys win games?’ So we were answering a lot of questions that honestly I don’t think we were ready for.”They weren’t ready, Irving surmised, because they weren’t healthy. Both battled injuries, and in the first 18 games of the first pairing of All-Star starters in franchise history, Doncic and Irving shared the court just nine times.Irving sat the last two games of the season when the Mavericks openly tanked — and...

Why dengue in Europe could spell disaster for the rest of the world

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 18:47:08 GMT

In the early morning of the last day of August, Parisians experienced for the first time a practice normally confined to tropical regions — authorities fumigating the city against the tiger mosquito. The event was a tangible confirmation of what public health stats already showed: Dengue, the deadly mosquito-borne disease, had well and truly arrived in Europe. In 2022, Europe saw more cases of locally acquired dengue than in the whole of the previous decade. The rise marks both a public health threat and a corresponding market opportunity for dengue vaccines and treatments; news that should spur the pharma industry to boost investment into the neglected disease. On the face of it, this shift would appear to benefit not only countries like France but also nations like Bangladesh and the Philippines that have long battled dengue. But that assumption could be fatally flawed, experts told POLITICO. People working in the field say the rise of dengue in the West could, in fa...

An area of low pressure will strengthen to our south as it interacts with a low moving in from the west. A few showers develop inland later on. Heavy rain and flash flooding concerns are elevated for western Connecticut into the New York Metro. Overnight temperatures fall into the 50s. Shower chances increase for our region. Rain favors the first half of the day tomorrow. It’ll be steadiest the farther south you are...

As Kyle Hendricks prepares for a pivotal start tonight, weak contact is the basis of his success for the Chicago Cubs

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 18:47:08 GMT

The day before Kyle Hendricks’ final regular-season start, the Chicago Cubs’ veteran tried to recall the last time he took the mound for such a pivotal game so late into the 162-game schedule.Hendricks figures it came in September 2019 when the Cubs tried to lock down a playoff spot, going from 14 games over .500 and in the final wild-card position with two weeks to go to missing the postseason thanks to a stretch of losing nine consecutive games. After a disastrous three-game sweep in Atlanta, the Cubs turn to Hendricks with their postseason hopes on life support Friday in Milwaukee, where they close out their regular-season slate.“This is what you play for,” Hendricks told the Tribune on Thursday. “You want to be winning and you’re in this game for one reason, and it’s to win. And so to have a group like this where you’re so close and to be able to win with them makes it even more special. To be in it now, we’re focused...

An election with no parties: Africa’s Eswatini, one of the last absolute monarchies, holds vote

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — The small southern African nation of Eswatini was holding elections Friday to decide part of the makeup of its parliament, even as its extremely wealthy king retains absolute power, political parties are banned and elected representatives can merely advise a monarch whose family has reigned supreme for 55 years.Eswatini, wedged between South Africa and Mozambique, is the last absolute monarchy in Africa and one of the few remaining in the world. King Mswati III, 55, has been the monarch since 1986, when he became ruler days after his 18th birthday. His father was king for 82 years before him, although Eswatini only gained independence from Britain in 1968.It was formerly known as Swaziland.Candidates for the house of assembly — the lower house — and the senate — the upper house — cannot belong to political parties, which were banned in 1973, and are nominated at a local level before they face a popular vote.Mswati III appoints a minority of the house o...

German opposition leader faces criticism for comments on dental care for migrants

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 18:47:08 GMT

BERLIN (AP) — Germany’s conservative opposition leader has drawn strong government criticism for suggesting that migrants are getting expensive dental treatment at the expense of established residents.Friedrich Merz, who leads the center-right Christian Democratic Union, assailed the government’s approach to immigration in an appearance Wednesday on Welt television. He said people “go crazy” when they see large numbers of unsuccessful asylum applicants staying and getting “full benefits.”“They sit at the doctor’s and get their teeth redone, and the German citizens next door can’t get appointments,” he alleged.Interior Minister Nancy Faeser on Thursday accused Merz of populism and said it was “completely inappropriate, particularly in these times. We face great challenges, and one shouldn’t contribute to dividing society.” Health Minister Karl Lauterbach told the daily German newspaper Bild that Merz was stirring up hatred against migrants “by apparently...
